Inside the Artist's world...
Gomathi Manoj is an accomplished Indian classical dancer, educator, and Artistic Director, whose artistic journey spans over three decades.
Her rich performance career includes acclaimed presentations across India and internationally in the United States, Singapore, the Kingdom of Bahrain, and Greece.
Gomathi’s formative training began in the Kingdom of Bahrain under the guidance of Kalamandalam Gurus—Shri Ashokan and Smt. Chandrika Ashokan, Smt. Sreedevi Sreenivasan, and Smt. Girija Sasi. Later, she trained under Guru Smt. Padmini Radhakrishnan — whose influence continues to shape her refined aesthetic and pedagogical approach.

Trained across three major Indian classical dance traditions, Gomathi embodies a rare versatility rooted in discipline and depth. Her primary expertise lies in Bharatanatyam, the classical dance heritage of Tamil Nadu, complemented by rigorous training in Mohiniattam, the graceful tradition of Kerala, and Kuchipudi, the dynamic classical form of Andhra Pradesh. This multi-form grounding lends breadth, sensitivity, and nuance to her performance vocabulary and teaching methodology.

Gomathi holds a Master’s Degree in Arts (Bharatanatyam) from Tamil University, Thanjavur, and a Diploma in Nattuvangam from the Guru Layathvam Academy of Fine Arts. She also brings an interdisciplinary academic perspective as a Master’s graduate in Software Engineering, reflecting a unique balance of structured thinking and creative expression.
Gomathi is also trained in the art of Nattuvangam—the rhythmic orchestration essential to Indian classical dance recitals—under the esteemed guidance of Shri Swamimalai Suresh, Shri Guru Bharadwaaj, and Shri RLV Hemanth Lekshman.
Her deep command over thālam (rhythmic structure) enables her to support and guide students during performances, ensuring artistic cohesion, rhythmic precision, and traditional integrity.
Gomathi Manoj’s artistic excellence has been widely recognized at both national and international levels. She is a recipient of the 2023 Individual Artist Fellowship, awarded by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA) in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, honoring her as an outstanding performer of high artistic merit.
She was also recognized as a Master Artist under the New Jersey Folk Apprenticeship Grant (2021–22) by NJSCA, recognizing her extraordinary artistic ability and commitment to tradition.
In April 2023, Gomathi received the Spandana Service Award from the Spandana Foundation for her dedicated service to Indian classical arts and the artistic community. Earlier in her career, she was conferred the prestigious titles “Singar Mani” by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai (2007) and “Nritya Shivali” by Shivali Cultural Society, Mumbai (2009).
